Sir:-
I laid before the Marquess of Salisbury your
letter of the 14th instant, enclosing copy of a con-
fidential despatch from the Officer Administering the
Government of Hongkong on the subject of the protec-
tion in China of British Companies registered in the
British Colony.
Lord Salisbury concurs in the reply which the
Secretary of State for the Colonies proposes to return
to that despatch.
